The farmer Fritz is chopping firewood in front of his home on this original Black Forest cuckoo clock, a typical Black Forest House with curved, shingled hip roof. The wood case is stained in walnut, with a partial half-timbered framework front, and decorated with miniature windows with little red shutters. The house front is surrounded with pine trees, and has a water trough on the left side. A goose flutters towards Fritz as he chops wood. The solid-wood cuckoo calls the number of the hour on every full hour (e.g. 3:00 p.m. or 3:00 a.m. 3 times) and once on the half-hour. During the cuckoo call, the farmer chops the wood with his ax. This clock has a manual night switch off. Clockface, numbers and hands are all made of wood. The mechanical clockwork runs for 24 hours. This classic model is crafted by the Anton Schneider company in Schonach, a family business that had its beginning in a farmhouse in 1848, and has grown to be one of the largest cuckoo clock producers in the area.
