This original Black Forest Cuckoo Clock depicts the shingle craftsman at work, fashioning shingles for the houses in the Black Forest. This profession was a way for the farmers to earn extra money on the side. Many of the houses in the Black Forest earlier had wooden shingled roofs. This Cuckoo Clock with its shingled roof and chimney shows this craftsmanship. The  wood case is stained in walnut, with exquisitely decorated with detailed carving on the front. Miniature windows have shutters and laced curtains. The solid-wood cuckoo calls the number of the hour on every full hour (e.g. 3:00 p.m. or 3:00 a.m. 3 times) and once on the half-hour. After the cuckoo calls on the hour and half-hour, one of the two alternating melodies plays. During the music, the shingler uses his tool to make shingles, and the water wheel and the dancing figurines dressed in folklore dress turn to the music on the balcony. The clockface, numbers and clockhands are all made of wood. This clock has a manual night switch off. The mechanical clockwork runs for 24-hours.
